Outdoor Camp Assistant – Izzie in New Zealand!

Posted on the 4th March 2020

British gap year volunteer Izzy is volunteering as an Outdoor Camp Assistant in the beautiful South Island of New Zealand:

Challenging herself in a new environment was why Izzie chose Aotearoa New Zealand as her destination for a Lattitude Global Volunteering placement. It appealed because of its incredible natural beauty and opportunities for outdoor recreation. Izzie wanted to get out of her comfort zone and develop a greater world view and she has done that at YMCA Camp Wainui.

Nestled on the coastline of Banks Peninsular in the South Island, Wainui is surround by native forest and rural landscapes, but is only just over an hour’s drive from Christchurch City.

As an Outdoor Camp Assistant, each day Izzie supervises groups of  young New Zealanders through various activities such as high ropes, kayaking, zip-lining, nature walks and archery.

The biggest highlight for Izzie has been developing strong friendships with other staff and volunteers who have been so welcoming and open. Travelling around New Zealand with her family has also been a high point of her gap year. Visiting Queenstown and Wellington and all the sights in between will be lifelong memories for Izzie.

The skills she is learning have helped her develop a great new skillset: adaptability, commitment, teamwork, communication, self-awareness and a greater world view. Izzie has had such a life changing experience  in Aoteraoa New Zealand that she is considering extending her time here, before embarking on her next challenge.
